Hi everyone! My name is Samuel and I'm studying in the Police Technology program at Ahuntsic. I'm doing my second year and there will only be one more to complete my studies. This glossary is for the students who want to learn about the program and for those who are currently in. All the words you will see are related to the police job, the institution that helps prevent crimes from happening. I'm doing this glossary because I want to help the students to properly understand the teachers when they are talking about the police. There are 20 words and I used different sites to choose them and to find the definitions. I want you now to use those if we have to talk about my program one day.
Analyst
noun
Someone whose job is to examine or to study something in an organized way. An expert who studies some cases and recommends appropriate actions to solve a problem.
Example: The analyst is studying the case to help the investigators finding some information in Jonathan's murder.

Arrest
noun
The act of taking someone to a place where the person may be accused of a crime after being caught by another person using legal authority.
Example: The murderer was placed under arrest by the police officers.

Bulletproof
adjective
Something impenetrable by bullets fired.
Example: Those police officers are using bulletproof vehicles.

Captain
noun
The person in charge of a group of officers and sergeants. The grade above lieutenant in the police department.
Example: The captain told the lieutenant to help the sergeants in Jonathan's case.

Common law
noun
Common law is the basis of the legal system in the Canada, UK, US, etc. It's a system of laws based on court decisions rather than on written laws made by a parliament.
Example: The Common law gives the police officer a discretionary power to choose what he wants to do in certain situations.

Complainant
noun
A person making a formal accusation on something or someone. A person who brings a formal charge.
Example: The complainant told the police that Alex was making too much noise.

Guilty

Someone who's found to have violated a criminal law by a jury or judge. A person responsible for a reprehensible act.
Example: The subject was found guilty of the murder of Jonathan.

Handcuffs
noun
Two parts, linked together, designed to secure an individual's wrists in proximity to each other.
Example: The police officers put the handcuffs on Robert's wrists.

Infraction
noun
The act of breaking a rule or law. The violation of an agreement.
Example: All types of fraud are infractions according to the law.

Interview
noun
A structured conversation between an officer and a subject where the officer asks questions. The other person provides answers.
Example: Jonathan had an interview with an investigator in Daniel's death case.

Intranet
noun
Something that includes connections through one or more gateway computers. It's a site not included on the Internet created by an organization.
Example: The police officer has to go in the Intranet to get the information.

Investigation
noun
The act of examining someone, a crime or a problem carefully to discover the truth about it.
Example: The murder of Jonathan is still under investigation to discover the truth about what happened.

Lieutenant
noun
The grade above sergeant in the police department. An officer who can replace a sergeant in certain circumstances.
Example: The lieutenant gave the sergeant a task to do before midnight.

Pepper spray
noun
Oils derived from cayenne pepper in an aerosol spray, which can irritate the respiratory passages and the eyes.
Example: The police officer is using his pepper spray instead of his weapon to arrest the subject.

Report
noun
Something that gives information to people after an investigation that has been done. It is used for giving an image of an event or situation. The police officers have to complete those after their interventions.
Example: The police officer did a report after his intervention in the case.

Scene
noun
Any location that may be associated with an accident or a committed crime. They contain physical evidence that can be pertinent to an investigation.
Example: There are 3 investigators on the crime scene that collect the evidence.

Sergeant
noun
The grade above the officers in the police department. He gives the tasks to his group of officers and does the toughest jobs when needed.
Example: The sergeant gave his officer a report because it has to be completed.

Taser
noun
An electric rifle used to neutralize targets with electric shocks that impair physical function.
Example: The police officers used their taser instead of their weapon to neutralize the suspect.

Victim
noun
Something or someone that has been damaged, hurt or killed by something or someone else. The cause could be on purpose or not.
Example: Jonathan stole Robert's cell. Robert is Jonathan's victim.

Witness
noun
A person who has seen an event and can attest to the reality or a fact. A person who can complete a testimony and give some information to the police.
Example: The witness saw the crime when it happened, but he didn't participate.
